I like to sit on the bench opposite the cathedral in the city near the park.
Sometimes I just sit alone and watch the people passing and I often
wonder where they are going and where they have been. For my own
amusement I make up little stories about them, based on the way they
dress, how they hold themselves and the expression or lack of
expression on their faces.

I’m rarely left alone on the bench for long; it’s a bit like playing musical
chairs, the music stops, someone sits and I usually open up some
dialogue just to be cheeky. I like talking with strangers, sometimes it’s
simply a matter of exchanging pleasantries, sometimes it’s not more than
a nod and on a very rare occasions they don’t respond at all or they give
a disapproving turn away.

Yesterday I got myself a cracker. She was one of the Hello People. I used
to call them nutter’s but that has now become politically incorrect or rude.
They are not quite homeless people or bag ladies, nor are they the scary
ones which your instincts tell you to run away from. They are probably a
bit outside the mental health scale of socially graded or graceful. I mean
the quirky, crazy ones, who fell through the cracks, failed the school of
life or excelled at it so much so that they perch above all the rules, poke
fun at the normal people and challenge them to turn away by simply
saying hello.

When I pulled up at the bench I noticed someone had left stuff on it. I was
curious enough to wonder if someone had forgotten it or why someone
would trust that it would still be there when they returned. A quick glance
invoiced a small mat, a light bulb, a bit of plumbing pipe, brochures, a
cap and a Women’s Weekly magazine.

I recognized the owner from about 50 yards away. Looking directly at me,
a beaming smile, dressed in a filthy jumper colored with coffee and food
stains, no shoes – only socks, and a mass of mattered grey hair. She
extended her hand from 10 steps away and said loudly, “My name is
Meg”.

She sat beside me, picked up my half drunk coffee and drank it like we
were long lost cousins. As people walked by she said hello to them, a few
looked blankly at her but most looked away and hurried their steps. I sat
amused and said nothing, but I started to feel this article gestating;
instamatic profiling, deeming you unworthy of a return greeting due to my
disapproval of how you look.

I turned to her and said, “You are lucky someone didn’t steal your stuff.”
She smiled a toothless grin and replied, “That’d be okay, I stole it all
myself, thought it might come in handy.”

She then took out a small box from her pocket and shook it. I have no
idea what was in there, but it rattled like a box of Tic Tacks. She stood up
and started shaking her scratchy sounds over and around me. “I’m a
healer, a spiritual healer, you know.”

She then stood behind me and started massaging my shoulders. At first I
wanted to pull away, it was getting a bit too weird, but I decided it was
harmless enough and a little amusing, so I relaxed into it and it actually
felt quite nice. People continued to pass by; they glanced side-ways, but
then she would say hello and they too scurried off.

“Do you belong to a spiritualist church?” I asked for the sake of saying
something.

“No, I’m a catholic, I go to that cathedral, and I’m a white witch, a good
white witch, and that’s how I got these healing powers.”

Then she tacked on, “Will you give me $4?”

“No.” I was disappointed that she asked.

She started to sing, If I Were a Rich Man, I laughed and sang with her.
For the next half hour we sat, laughing and singing and mildly mocking
the up-tight normal ones who shrunk themselves down to get past us.

I stayed a while longer, she gave me her life story; tragic and honest and
as light as the breeze. She ended by telling me she needed to go to the
Diabetic Clinic in the hospital. I offered to walk with her as I needed to go
by there.

“Goodo, I know where I can steal some biscuits and coffee.” As I turned
to leave, she said, “Call me sometime.” I smiled, but we both knew that I
hadn't taken her number.
